People representing many different faiths, ethnicities, languages, and cultures populate Modern Israel. Nevertheless, Jews of European origins have dominated the state's political and cultural climate. Through an exploration of literature and film, we will explor the ways in which the sense of the "self" is constructed and the ways in which the "other" is imagined in Israeli culture. "Others" include Palestinians, Sepharadim, Mizrahim, non-Zionists, Women, Eastern Europeans who do not relinquish their ties to the past, as well as individuals who resist the collective ideologies of a modern nation in the making.
