Special Topics in Jewish Studies; The Jewish Graphic Novel

Also offered as ENGL379D and CMLT398R. Credit granted for JWST319R, ENGL379D, or CMLT398R. We will explore the boom in contemporary Jewish graphic novels from all over the world. What defines a Jewish graphic novel? What does a graphic novel accomplish that a conventional novel does not? Can a graphic novel tackle serious issues within the Jewish community, issues such as trauma , sexuality, gender relations, class, and nationalism? We will read the works of Art Spiegelman, Rutu Modan, Leela Corman, Harvey Pekar, and others.
