Close readings and discussion of literary, philosophical and historical texts in the original language. The class situates texts in their historical context and also discusses differences between Classical and modern Chinese. Texts in Chinese. Class discussion and course work mainly in English.

This course will serve two purposes. The first is to read in its entirety a beautiful, scholarly and complete translation of a work that one fifth of the world's population consider to be the best novel ever written. The second is to learn something about the cultural history of China, in particular beliefs and practices of daily life. Taught in English.
