In the age of pop music and blockbuster films, of memes and viral videos, we often forget that theatre was one of the original forms of popular entertainment. We will focus on theatre practitioners including actors, directors, designers and backstage personnel to understand how theatre is produced. We will also consider popular entertainment in Europe and America, with a particular focus on musical theatre and Broadway to explore how theatre communicates, resonates, and remains relevant to all audiences.

And, most importantly, students will learn creative process through practice.

Every society has rebels - those who refuse to conform to the mainstream's rigid rules, aesthetics, and beliefs. From unruly skateboarders, punk rockers, bohemian poets, and radical theater performers, to national revolutionary movements and brick-throwing anarchists - such groups form niches that are defined by their exclusion from society. We will look at how their beliefs and actions fit into a particular historical context, and how their actions drive social change.

The magic and mystery of character design will be unmasked! Students will learn various building and finishing techniques on how to make multiple styles of puppets and masks, and exploring performance techniques upon the completion of each project. Demonstration of techniques will be carefully guided by the instructor. We'll work with geodesic cardboard design, clay character design and paper mach positive molds, two-part negative mold/neoprene technique and found object design. Students will also compose a design notebook of sketches, notes, found pictures and brainstorms. Designs by the instructor will provide some inspiration for shape, size and paint finishing, as well as examples by Handspring Puppets, Jim Henson Company and many more. Students will be encouraged to share examples of inspiring works for the class to learn from as well. Projects range from a single class session, to several week processes. In this advanced course, we will be emphasizing administrative and artistic development for the upcoming season at Andy's Summer Playhouse, named 2018 SUMMER OF LEGACY. Andy's Summer Playhouse is a 48 year old non-for-profit children's theater in Wilton, NH, focusing on original works written, directed and designed by professionals while performed and operated by children ages 8-18. The productions are intended for audiences of all ages. In this course, students will be asked to investigate and develop the programs offered while also thinking outside of the box regarding marketing and outreach for the local communities around the theater. This course offers real-life investigations on how to operate and grow a small non-for-profit performing arts organization while also learning the entrepreneurial skills to be an independent artist.

This class will look at the iconography of performance from the earliest images of dance, music, and theatre performances to the advent of photography. Students will be asked to develop their own Digital Humanities projects examining issues related to the use of images in understanding performances in a historic period, with a goal of making these project accessible as works of public scholarship for museums and exhibitions.
